Summary

Highland Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 283 students in grades PK-5 in West Monroe, Louisiana, which is part of the Ouachita Parish School District. This school consistently outperforms the district and state averages on standardized tests, with 80% of students proficient or better in ELA and 68-69% proficient in math, compared to 70% and 64-65% statewide, respectively.

Highland Elementary particularly excels in serving certain student subgroups, with its African American students and special education students ranking among the top in the state. However, the school has seen a concerning increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 15.5% to 24.6% in the past year, which will need to be addressed. Additionally, while the school's overall performance is strong, its white students have seen a decline, ranking 337th out of 434 Louisiana elementary schools for this subgroup in 2023-2024, warranting further investigation.

Compared to nearby schools, Highland Elementary outperforms most, but Boley Elementary, just 1 mile away, had an impressive 92% of students proficient in math in 2024-2025, suggesting Highland could learn from its neighbor's practices. Highland has also seen a significant increase in the percentage of students qualifying for free/reduced lunch, rising from 37% to 60% in the past two years, which may be impacting the school's performance and should be considered in its improvement efforts.
