Summary

Morris Jeff Community School in New Orleans, LA, serves 517 students in grades PK-6 and is part of the RSD-Morris Jeff Community School district, but recent data shows a significant decline in overall performance, dropping to a 1-star rating and the 29th percentile statewide.

The most critical issue at Morris Jeff is a stark and inequitable achievement gap. While White students perform well (76th percentile, 4 stars), Hispanic students (11th percentile), African American students (28th percentile), and students from low-income backgrounds (12th percentile) are struggling significantly. This disparity is far more pronounced than at nearby Bricolage Academy, which serves a student body with a very high poverty rate (86.3%) but achieves more balanced results across all student groups and a higher overall rank (40th percentile). Morris Jeff also underperforms in math, with only 45% of students proficient compared to the state average of 62%, while its ELA proficiency (64%) is closer to the state average (70%).

The school's overall rank has fallen dramatically from the 68th percentile in 2012-2013 to its current low, a trend not seen in nearby schools like Edward Hynes Charter School - Lakeview, which likely performs much higher given its low poverty rate. While the school reports a graduation rate of 85.5%, this data is likely from a previous configuration and does not reflect current elementary student outcomes. The comparison to Bricolage Academy, just 0.77 miles away, suggests that Morris Jeff's struggles are not solely due to student demographics but are likely related to school-specific practices and resource allocation that need urgent attention.

Open Quote THIS SCHOOL DOES NOT TEACH THE KIDS ANYTHING WITH THE PROGRAM THE KIDS ARE SELF TAUGHT. I REALLY BELIEVE THAT THE SCHOOL WOULD BECOME A GOOD SCHOOL IF THEY HAD THE RIGHT PEOPLE IN PLACE TO TEACH. THERE ARE A LOT OF KIDS COMING FROM PRIVATE SCHOOL TO MORRIS JEFFE SO WHEN THEY GET TO MORRIS JEFF THE KIDS ARE NOT BEING TAUGHT PROPERLY. I REALLY LOVE THE FACT THAT MY KIDS LOVE THE SCHOOL THAT'S ONLY BECAUSE THEY DO NOT DO WORK AT ALL IN SCHOOL. THEY ONLY GO IN THEIR OWN GROUPS AND ARE SELF TAUGHT. THIS SCHOOL USE PYP AND MYP PROGRAM HOWEVER IT IS NOT RAN CORRECTLY. I FEEL MY KIDS HAVE LOST SKILLS. MORRIS JEFF WILL BE A GREAT SCHOOL ONLY IF THE TEACHERS ACTUALLY TAUGHT THE WAY THE PROGRAM IS DESIGN. I REALLY BELIEVE THE CLASS ROOM SIZE IS TO BIG 28 KIDS 1 TEACHER THAT ALLOW THE KIDS TO DO WHATEVER THEY WANT. WHEN ASKED ABOUT HOW THE TEACHER TEACHES I AM BEING TOLD WE ARE UP TO LOUISIANA STANDARDS THE SCHOOL IS A C SCHOOL THEY ONLY BECAME A LOW B SCHOOL BASED ON THE 10 POINT CURVE. THIS SCHOOL HAVE BEEN A C SCHOOL AND THE SCORES ARE SOOOO LOW. THIS IS THE BIGGEST MISTAKE I HAVE MADE BECAUSE MY KIDS ARE HAPPY HOWEVER THEY ARE DECLINING I FEEL THAT THEY ARE NOT GETTING THE MATERIAL THEY NEED IT WOULD BE GREAT IF THERE WAS A BLANCE. IF YOU WANT YOUR KIDS HAPPY SEND THEM TO THIS SCHOOL IF YPOU WANTED THEN TO GET AN EDUCATION AND BE HAPPY AT THE SAME TIME LOOK SOMEWHERE OTHER THAN THE NEW BUILDING THAT'S FULL OF PLAY.
