Summary:

Four elementary schools in ZIP code 40214 serve 2,196 students in Kenwood Elementary (K–5) and three PK–5 schools: Auburndale Elementary, Trunnell Elementary and Rutherford Elementary. The clearest area-wide concern is that 2025–2026 proficiency averages fell below state averages in every reported subject, by about 11 to 25 percentage points.

Kenwood stands out across the broadest range: it led all three reported reading grades, fourth-grade science, fifth-grade writing and fifth-grade editing and mechanics. Its average across reported results was 31%, compared with 28% at Auburndale, 17% at Trunnell and 16% at Rutherford. Still, Kenwood’s strongest result, 53% in third-grade reading, was the only school result above its state comparison; its fifth-grade math was 16%, versus 43% statewide. Auburndale offers a different strength, leading fifth-grade math, reading and social studies; its 36% in social studies was just 2 points below the state rate. Trunnell and Rutherford had the lowest overall averages, with Trunnell lowest in several subjects and Rutherford lowest in fourth-grade math and fifth-grade reading.

Recent trends are mixed: matched reading results rose 5% on average and writing rose 12%, while math fell 2%; the math gap with the state widened by about 2 points. SchoolDigger’s 2025–2026 rankings put Kenwood at the 18th percentile, Auburndale at the 14th, Trunnell at the 3rd and Rutherford at the 1st; Auburndale’s percentile improved 10 points since 2023–2024, while Kenwood’s fell 8. All four schools reported free/reduced lunch eligible figures for the 2024–2025 school year, ranging from 71% at Kenwood to 78% at Rutherford; ratios range from 14.5 students per teacher at Trunnell to 23.4 at Rutherford. These figures provide context, not an explanation for school results. Some school results were suppressed or unreported and are excluded from averages.
