Wayne County Middle School

Wayne County Middle School serves 646 students in grades 6–8 in Monticello and the surrounding Wayne County community. Its 2025–26 proficiency results were below state levels in every reported subject and generally close to district results. The most important finding for families is that the school had the lowest proficiency among nearby middle schools in nearly every grade-and-subject comparison.

The school’s results are usually close to those of the Wayne County district, but the state and nearby-school comparisons show bigger gaps. For example, the school’s Math average across grades 6–8 was 22.7%, versus 22.3% districtwide and 40% statewide; Reading was 34.3%, versus 33.7% districtwide and 48% statewide. Science was the closest subject to the state result: grade 7 proficiency was 16%, 12 points below the state and 16 points below the nearby-school average; it tied Clinton County Middle School in that subject. Grade 8 Social Studies was furthest below the state, at 18% versus 39%, and below the nearby-school average of 43%. Grade 8 Math and Reading were also the school’s weakest grades, at 18% and 27%, respectively.

Results have declined over time: from 2022–23 to 2025–26, Math proficiency fell from 33% to 23%, Reading from 46% to 34%, and Writing from 49% to 30%; all six comparable subjects declined. SchoolDigger’s statewide standing also dropped, from the 37th percentile in 2023–24 to the 11th in 2024–25 and 6th in 2025–26, with zero stars in the latest year. One relative bright spot in SchoolDigger’s measure of how well the school serves Hispanic students was their 27th-percentile ranking in 2024–25, compared with the school’s overall 11th percentile that year; it was still below the midpoint. For context, the 2024–25 student-teacher ratio was 16.1, and 75% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible. The eligible share was below Clinton County Middle School’s 77%, but above those at Russell County Middle School and Southern Middle School.
