Summary

Layne Elementary is a public elementary school in Louisville, Kentucky, serving 404 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Jefferson County school district, which is ranked 140 out of 157 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Layne Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Kentucky elementary schools, with a 1-star or 0-star rating from SchoolDigger for most of the past decade. The school's performance has been relatively stagnant, with high chronic absenteeism rates ranging from 25% to 38.1% in recent years, significantly higher than the district and state averages. Academically, Layne Elementary students consistently perform below the district and state averages on the Kentucky Summative Assessment (KSA) in core subjects, with only 33% of 3rd graders proficient or better in mathematics, compared to 30% in the district and 43% statewide. The school's performance is particularly low for certain student subgroups, such as White, Special Education, and Disabled students.

When comparing Layne Elementary to other nearby schools in the Jefferson County district, it becomes clear that Layne is one of the lower-performing schools in the area. Schools like Eisenhower Elementary and Medora Elementary, which are within a few miles of Layne, consistently outperform Layne on academic measures and have higher ratings from SchoolDigger. Despite the relatively high per-student spending at Layne Elementary, the school's academic outcomes remain poor, raising questions about the effectiveness of the school's resource allocation and the need to ensure that resources are being used in the most impactful way possible.

Open Quote I feel the previous review hit the mark. Layne's Staff is a very caring and devoted staff. They do a fantastic job. The current Principal started in 2013-ish. He has really improved the school with his leadership. Every classroom has computers and tablets. There is a Technology Teacher, a PE teacher, and a music teacher. Budget cuts in the state and district caused the school to lay-off the art teacher two year ago. Budget cuts continued and last year (2015) the school did not continue with their hands on Science Curriculum (worm habitats, Real Butterfly life cycle terrariums, newts, and salamander ect). Clubs the school offers are: Robotics, STLP, Safety Patrol, Student Council, Chess Team, Academic Team, Basketball, Volleyball and Cheerleading. The Cafeteria staff is amazing. They are always decorating the cafeteria with themes and having parties during lunch time.

The previous review mentioned lack of parent involvement and they were 100% correct. If Layne does have a flaw it is that parents just aren't volunteering. Close Quote

Open Quote Layne is a wonderful environment for my two girls. The staff and teachers are all friendly and kind and seem to really care about each and every student. They offer a lot of free engagement activities for families and we always feel super welcome when we attend. Under new leadership the school has made excellent progress over the past two years. The exposure my children obtain from the other cultures and ethnicities at the school is priceless. I would give it 5 stars, but there is a real lack of parental involvement and consistant communication. I believe part of the problem to be the large populations of students whose parents do not speak English and/or the economic status of many of the families. The school is clean and well stocked with technological advances. My kids are thriving at Layne and I would suggest it to anyone looking for a school that's as diverse as the world we live in.
