Summary:

Spencer County has five schools—two elementary schools, one middle school, one high school and one alternative school—serving students from elementary through high school. In 2025–2026, Spencer County Elementary School had the strongest consistent test results: it scored higher than Taylorsville Elementary School in all 10 matching grade-and-subject comparisons, averaging 57% proficient compared with 44% at Taylorsville. It also averaged 13 points above the matching state results. The most important distinction for families comparing the elementary schools is that Spencer County Elementary led in every matched result.

Spencer County High School also stood out, averaging 10 points above its matching state results; all six reported results beat the state, led by 11th-grade writing at 67% versus 47%. Spencer County Middle School was the weakest of the schools with reported results, averaging 3 points below its matching state results. Taylorsville Elementary was close to the state overall, but its 5th-grade editing and mechanics result was 36% versus 48% statewide, and its writing result was 28% versus 35%. These school averages summarize different grade spans, so the matched subject-and-grade comparisons are most useful.

Recent trends differ by school: Taylorsville’s average rose 3 points from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, while Spencer County Elementary’s remained level and the middle school’s fell 4 points. SchoolDigger’s percentile ranking for the middle school also declined from the 66th percentile in 2023–2024 to the 39th in 2025–2026; Taylorsville’s rose from the 35th to the 49th, while Spencer County Elementary stayed around the 80th. In 2024–2025, free/reduced lunch eligible students made up 53% at Taylorsville and 33% at Spencer County Elementary; their student–teacher ratios were 15.4 and 16.6, respectively. Hillview Academy had 50% chronic absenteeism in 2025–2026, compared with 24% statewide, and its school test results for that year were suppressed.
