Summary:

The Perry County school list covers nine schools serving prekindergarten through grade 12: six elementary schools, two high schools and one alternative school. Together they enroll 3,416 students, from 7 at Perry County Alternative School to 819 at Perry County Central High School. Reported elementary results average above state rates in each subject, by about 7 points in math and 8 in reading, but results vary widely among schools and grades. The most important finding is that these countywide averages hide sharply different school-level experiences.

Robinson Elementary led six reported elementary grade-and-subject comparisons, including grade-8 writing at 88%, 40 points above the state rate. Viper Elementary stood out in reading, with 75% in grade 3 and 79% in grade 4, while East Perry County Elementary reached 80% in grade-6 reading. At the lower end, Robert W. Combs Elementary had several low reported results, including 20% in grade-5 math and 30% in grade-5 reading; its SchoolDigger percentile rank was 11 in 2025–2026. The gap between schools reached 50 points in grade-8 writing. Among high schools, Buckhorn School led grade-10 reading, 61% to Central’s 39%, while Central’s 2025–2026 graduation rate was 98%, compared with 96% at Buckhorn.

Recent changes are mixed: Buckhorn’s grade-10 reading rose 30 points from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, and Viper’s grade-4 math rose 28 points, while West Perry Elementary grade-8 reading fell 29 points. SchoolDigger’s elementary percentile ranks also tell different stories: East Perry rose from 37 to 77 and Robinson from 73 to 90 over three years, while Combs fell from 19 to 11. School size and the reported income measure do not neatly separate higher- and lower-scoring schools: Combs had 325 students, a 13.2 student-teacher ratio and 84% free/reduced lunch eligible in 2024–2025, while Robinson had 278 students, a 17.1 ratio and 77% eligible. Absenteeism is another concern: the 2025–2026 district rate was 39%, versus 24% statewide, and ranged from 24% at Viper to 53% at the alternative school.
