Lyon County

Lyon County has three schools: Lyon County Elementary School, serving pre-K–5; Lyon County Middle School, serving grades 6–8; and Lyon County High School, serving grades 9–12. In 2025–26, each school’s proficiency results were above Kentucky’s corresponding results, though the size of the advantage differed by subject and grade. The clearest overall finding is that all three schools beat the state in every reported subject-grade result, by 1 to 30 percentage points.

Lyon County Middle School had the strongest average state-relative performance in 2025–26, at 17 points above the state; Lyon County Elementary School averaged 15 points above, and Lyon County High School averaged 13 points above. The middle school’s lead over the high school was modest—about 4 points on this average measure. Writing was the strongest subject profile overall, averaging 22 points above the state, while social studies was the weakest at 6 points above. The elementary school’s grade-5 writing result led the set, at 65% versus 35%; the middle school’s grade-8 social studies result was closest to the state, at 40% versus 39%. High-school graduation was also strong: 98% versus 94% statewide. Attendance is a notable exception: high-school chronic absenteeism was 23%, close to the state’s 24% and higher than at the middle school (17%) or elementary school (13%).

Results improved most at the high school: its average advantage grew by 10 points between 2024–25 and 2025–26. The elementary school’s grew by 6 points, while the middle school’s narrowed by 4 points, despite remaining highest in 2025–26. SchoolDigger rankings also show different paths: the high school rose from the 72nd to the 89th percentile, the elementary school finished at the 84th percentile after a dip, and the middle school moved from the 94th to the 87th percentile. Student–teacher ratios were 18.0 at the elementary school, 15.8 at the middle school, and 16.3 at the high school. For 2024–25, free/reduced lunch eligible shares were 51%, 47%, and 46%, respectively; these figures provide context, not an explanation for results. Because the schools serve different grade spans, their average test margins are not same-grade comparisons.
