Summary:

Edmonton has three public schools serving prekindergarten through grade 12 in the Metcalfe County district, with about 1,412 students across elementary, middle, and high school. The clearest finding is a sharp contrast by grade and subject: Metcalfe County Elementary School was below state benchmarks in all six reported subjects, while Metcalfe County High School exceeded the state in four 11th-grade subjects but lagged substantially in 10th-grade math and reading.

The high school stands out most positively in 11th-grade science, where 33% were proficient versus 23% statewide, and in writing, social studies, and editing and mechanics, where it led by 5 to 7 points. Its 10th-grade math and reading results were 18% and 32%, respectively—22 and 17 points below state rates. The elementary school had the broadest shortfalls: its average writing proficiency was 13% versus 35% statewide, a 22-point gap, and its science and reading averages trailed by 11 and 10 points. Metcalfe County Middle School had a more mixed profile, with social studies and editing and mechanics 5 and 6 points above state averages, but math 10 points below. Because the schools serve different grades, these figures are most useful as comparisons with state results for the same grades, rather than as a direct school ranking.

Recent trends favor the middle and high schools overall, although individual subjects moved in different directions. From 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, SchoolDigger’s statewide percentile rank rose from 25 to 54 for the high school and from 28 to 38 for the middle school, while the elementary rank fell from 31 to 25. High-school math and reading proficiency nevertheless dropped by 16 and 14 points, while writing rose by 24. Attendance is a concern at the high school: chronic absenteeism was 43%, compared with 24% statewide; its graduation rate was 95%, versus 94% statewide. For context, in 2024–2025, free/reduced lunch eligible shares were 76% at the elementary school, 77% at the middle school, and 72% at the high school. Student-teacher ratios were 14.4, 16.3, and 16.2, respectively.
