Summary:

The 16 schools listed for Ashland include eight elementary, two middle, five high and one alternative school, with reported KSA results covering grades 3 through 11. In 2025–26, the schools’ average result across reported subject-grade combinations was about 4 percentage points below Kentucky’s, but that overall figure masks wide differences between schools and subjects. The most important finding is that school outcomes are highly uneven, not uniformly strong or weak across the area.

Some school-specific results stand well above the state: Crabbe Elementary School reached 79% in grade 5 writing, 44 points above Kentucky, while Boyd County Middle School scored 63% in grade 8 writing, 15 points above. At the other end, grade 5 writing ranged from Crabbe’s 79% to Summit Elementary School’s 14%, a 65-point spread. Other low results include Fairview Elementary School’s 17% in grade 5 reading, 34 points below the state, and Fairview High School’s 18% in grade 8 math, 21 points below. These highs are subject-specific: Boyd County Middle’s grade 8 math was 38%, just below the state’s 39%.

Recent changes are mixed, while matched results overall moved about 2 points farther below Kentucky from 2024–25 to 2025–26. SchoolDigger’s longer-term rankings show a different pattern for some schools: Crabbe rose 13 percentile points from 2023–24 to 2025–26, while Fairview High fell 46 points. Similar school profiles also show different results: Boyd County High School and Paul G. Blazer High School had similar enrollment and free/reduced lunch eligible measures in 2024–25—about 53% and 54%—yet Boyd County High led grade 10 math by 13 points. Hager Elementary School and Oakview Elementary School also trade leads by subject, despite different student-teacher ratios. Attendance is another consideration: Boyd County High’s graduation rate was 99% in 2025–26, but chronic absenteeism was 42%, compared with 24% statewide.
