Summary:

Zip code 66542 has two PK–6 elementary schools, Tecumseh South Elementary and Tecumseh North Elementary, both in the Shawnee Heights district, with 464 and 435 students, respectively. In 2025–26, the two schools’ average proficiency was above the state figure in ELA, math, and science, but that overall picture hides a pronounced difference between schools. The most important distinction for families is math: South is well above the state, while North is below it.

Tecumseh South stands out in ELA and especially math, with 55% proficient in ELA and 56% in math, compared with North’s 47% and 33%. The schools are 8 percentage points apart in ELA and 23 points apart in math; South’s math result is 15 points above the state, while North’s is 8 points below. South also exceeds the state in all three subjects. Tecumseh North leads in science, at 45% versus South’s 44%, though both are above the state’s 38%. SchoolDigger ranks South at the 67th percentile, up from the 57th last year; North is at the 34th percentile, compared with 33rd last year.

Results improved in most subjects, but North’s math score moved in the opposite direction: from 34% to 33%, while South rose from 49% to 56%. Both schools improved in ELA and science as well; South gained 4 points in ELA and 5 in science, while North gained 5 and 3 points. Fifth-grade science is a useful counterpoint to the all-grades results: both schools were slightly below the state, at 44% for South and 45% for North versus 46%. South’s reported student-teacher ratio is higher (13.9 versus 12.6), while North’s reported free/reduced-lunch rate is higher (54% versus 43%); these are contextual differences, not explanations for test results. Chronic absenteeism was 10% at South and 16% at North, compared with 18% statewide.
