Summary

Kansas Connections Academy is an alternative K–12 school in Elkhart serving 1,200 students. Its latest results show elevated chronic absenteeism as well as an academic challenge: in 2025–26, 28% of students were chronically absent, compared with 18% statewide. Mathematics is the clearest concern: proficiency was 20%, versus 41% statewide and 22% in the district, and every reported grade was below the state.

There are no other schools within 20 miles, so nearby-school comparisons are unavailable. Compared with the Elkhart district, the school was slightly ahead in ELA (41% versus 40%) and science (32% versus 31%), but behind in math. Compared with Kansas overall, however, all three subjects were lower: ELA by 5 percentage points, science by 6, and math by 21. My daughter has been going to KCA since 6th grade. This is her second year and I don't foresee her going anywhere else for her education in the future. People I know still tell me her social skill will suffer, but then I tell them about all of the great field trips. We go do or see something fun and educational about every two months.
