Summary:

Sylvan Grove has two schools serving students from prekindergarten through grade 12: Lucas/Sylvan Elementary Unified serves prekindergarten–grade 6, and Sylvan-Lucas Unified Junior Senior serves grades 7–12. The elementary school has the higher 2025–2026 all-grades proficiency in ELA, math, and science, though neither school is ahead of the state in every subject. The clearest shared concern is math: both schools were below the state result, by 2 points at the elementary school and 8 points at the junior-senior school.

Lucas/Sylvan Elementary stands out for its current all-grades results, leading the junior-senior school by 5 points in ELA, 5 in math, and 18 in science. Its results were 52% in ELA and 48% in science, both above the state’s 46% and 38%; math was 39%, below the state’s 41%. Sylvan-Lucas Junior Senior had 47% in ELA, slightly above the state, but was below state results in math and science, at 33% and 31%. Its grade-level results vary: 10th-grade ELA was 61% compared with 41% statewide, while 8th-grade ELA was 20% compared with 42%. The schools serve different grades, so their all-grades results are not a grade-matched comparison.

Recent changes show stronger ELA results at both schools, while math and science moved in different directions. From 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, ELA proficiency rose by 10 points at the elementary school and 7 points at the junior-senior school. Junior-senior math rose by 16 points, while elementary math fell by 6; science fell by 10 points at the elementary school and rose by 3 at the junior-senior school. SchoolDigger ranked the junior-senior school in the 76th percentile in 2025–2026, up from the 32nd percentile the previous year. Its 2023–2024 graduation rate was 96%, compared with 90% statewide. Attendance is a less favorable note there: chronic absenteeism was 19%, versus 18% statewide, while the elementary school’s rate was 7%. Enrollment was 125 at the elementary school and 144 at the junior-senior school, with student-teacher ratios of 9.6 and 10.4, respectively.
