Baldwin City

Baldwin City has four schools serving children from the elementary years through high school: two elementary schools, a junior high and a high school. Three schools have current proficiency results, and all three are above Kansas in every reported subject. The clearest standout is Baldwin Junior High School, which leads the other reporting schools in both math and science.

Baldwin Junior High School has 52% proficiency in math and 47% in science—11 and 8 percentage points above Kansas, respectively. Baldwin High School narrowly leads ELA: its 53.9% result is just above the Junior High’s 53.5%; it also has the lowest science result, 40%, though that is still 1 point above the state. Baldwin Elementary Intermediate Center has the lowest ELA and math results, at 51% and 45%, but remains above Kansas in both. Across the three schools, average proficiency is 53% in ELA, 48% in math and 42% in science—about 7, 7 and 4 points above state results.

Recent changes show a sharp contrast: Junior High math rose 9 points and science 1 point from the prior year, while the Intermediate Center fell 4 points in ELA, 3 in math and 21 in science. Its science result is still above Kansas, but its former 21-point lead has narrowed to 3 points. SchoolDigger’s statewide ranking percentiles also diverged: High School rose from 72 to 85 and Junior High from 71 to 82, while the Intermediate Center fell from 66 to 49. Reported student–teacher ratios range from 13.7 at High School to 18.2 at the Intermediate Center; free/reduced-lunch rates range from 28% to 34%, observations that do not explain the results. The Baldwin Elementary Primary Center has no test scores in the data, so proficiency comparisons cover only the other three schools.
