Summary:

Republic County has two schools serving grades PK–12: one elementary school and one junior/senior high school, with 273 and 245 students, respectively. In 2025–26, the elementary school was above state rates in all three all-grade subjects, while the junior/senior high was below them in all three. The clearest takeaway is that results differ substantially between the county’s two schools.

Belleville East Elementary leads the comparison, with 59% proficiency in English language arts (ELA), 57% in math, and 63% in science—about 26, 22, and 26 percentage points above the junior/senior high, respectively. It also exceeds state rates by 13 points in ELA, 16 in math, and 25 in science. Republic County Junior/Senior High School is below state rates at 34% in ELA, 35% in math, and 37% in science; its science result is closest to the state, just 1 point below. Grade-level results add nuance: the elementary school’s grade 3 math rate is 74%, 31 points above the state, while the high school is above state rates in grade 10 math by 9 points and in grade 8 science by 4 points.

Recent changes favor the elementary school: from 2024–25 to 2025–26, its results rose 11 points in ELA, 18 in math, and 22 in science. At the junior/senior high, math rose 5 points and science 1 point, while ELA fell 1 point. SchoolDigger’s statewide ranking also improved for both schools: Belleville East moved from the 37th to the 77th percentile, and the junior/senior high from the 46th to the 62nd. The junior/senior high has a lower student–teacher ratio (10.8 versus 11.8), while Belleville East has a higher free/reduced-lunch rate (64% versus 52%); these are contextual differences, not explanations for the scores. Chronic absenteeism is below the state rate at both schools: 9% at the elementary school and 12% at the junior/senior high, compared with 18% statewide.
