Wamego

Wamego has five listed schools: two elementary schools, one middle school, and two high schools, including a virtual school. Three schools have 2025–26 proficiency figures, and their all-grades results show a clear academic leader: West Elementary leads in English language arts (ELA), math, and science, while Wamego High has the lowest results in all three, especially science. Because schools serve different grades, these all-grades comparisons are descriptive rather than direct grade-for-grade comparisons. The most important distinction is West’s broad lead and Wamego High’s particularly weak science result.

West Elementary scores 67% in ELA, 65% in math, and 59% in science—19, 14, and 36 percentage points above Wamego High, respectively; Wamego Middle School falls between them at 51%, 53%, and 46%. West is also above the state in every subject, while Wamego High’s science result is 15 points below it. SchoolDigger places West at the 89th percentile, the middle school at the 81st, and Wamego High at the 67th. Completion figures add a different contrast: Wamego High’s graduation rate was 96%, compared with 72% at Wamego High School Virtual School; the virtual school’s 29% dropout rate was much higher than the high school’s 0.4%.

Recent results improved most sharply at Wamego High: ELA rose 24 points and math 23 from 2024–25 to 2025–26. West gained 3 points in ELA and 2 in math but lost 10 in science; the middle school gained 3 in science while ELA fell 4 points. SchoolDigger rankings rose slightly for West and the middle school, while Wamego High rebounded from the 23rd percentile in 2024–25 to the 67th in 2025–26. Reported student-teacher ratios and free/reduced-lunch rates do not follow the achievement pattern neatly: West has the highest ratio, 17.1, and a 32% lunch rate, yet the strongest scores; Wamego High’s ratio is 13.1 and its lunch rate is 28%.
