Montezuma has two listed schools: Montezuma Elementary serves prekindergarten through grade 5 and enrolls 83 students, while South Gray High serves grades 9–12 and enrolls 59. The clearest shared academic concern is math: in 2025–26, proficiency was 24% at Elementary and 21% at South Gray, compared with 41% statewide—17 and 20 percentage points below the state, respectively.
Montezuma Elementary stands out for science: 70% of students were proficient, 32 points above the state’s 38%; South Gray High was at 21%, 17 points below the state. That 49-point difference is the sharpest school-to-school split. Elementary also had strong third-grade results, beating state figures by 30 points in ELA and 12 points in math, but fourth- and fifth-grade math fell below state results by 24 and 35 points.
