It has been in the bottom quartile of Indiana elementary schools in every year shown in its history and has never earned above 1 star. Many students come from low-income households — 84.49% qualified for free or reduced lunch in 2024–2025 — and the school has a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 13:1 and per-student spending of $11,098.

Academically, 2025–2026 was a difficult year. All-grades proficiency was 12.75% in English/language arts, 22.97% in math, and 20.00% in science — the lowest in each subject among the nearby schools compared. Math has been Columbia's relative bright spot, consistently scoring above the district average, while ELA has consistently trailed it. The most alarming result is third-grade ELA, where just 2.56% of students were proficient, compared with 20.86% district-wide and 40.8% statewide. Results also dropped noticeably from 2024–2025 in all three subjects, and the school's state rank percentile fell from 17 to 10.

Two things stand out in a positive direction: chronic absenteeism was 13.7% in 2024–2025, better than the district's 14.6% and the state's 16.7%, and it has improved substantially from 27.1% in 2021–2022. Still, Fairview Elementary School, with a similarly high low-income rate and similar enrollment, outperforms Columbia in all three subjects, and Landis Elementary School — in the same district — performs much better on every measure. That suggests demographics and resources alone do not explain the results, and that early literacy is the most urgent priority.
