Lodge Community School

Summary:

Lodge Community School is an elementary school serving grades K-8 in Evansville, Indiana, part of the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corp district. The school has a diverse student population that is predominantly African American and Hispanic, and faces significant challenges in academic performance, student engagement, and resource allocation.

Despite spending around $14,000 per student, which is significantly higher than the $9,000-$13,000 spent at nearby schools, and having a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 8:1 to 10.2:1, Hebron Elementary School, Delaware Elementary School, and other nearby schools in the district consistently outperform Lodge Community School on ILEARN assessments for English Language Arts and Math. In the 2023-2024 school year, only 12.79% of Lodge students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 37.25% for the district, and only 8.95% were proficient or better in Math, compared to 37.06% for the district.

Additionally, Lodge Community School has very high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 21.6% to 28.5% over the past few years, which is much higher than the district average. A very high percentage of Lodge students, ranging from 72.35% to 84.55%, also qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage. These challenges, combined with the school's consistent ranking in the bottom 10-15% of Indiana elementary schools over the past decade, suggest the need for targeted interventions and support to address the unique needs of this diverse student body and improve academic outcomes.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
