Winfield Elementary School is a PK–5 school in Crown Point, Indiana — a Lake County community — serving 658 students, the largest enrollment of the six Crown Point Community School Corp elementary schools. It ranks 124th of 1,015 Indiana elementary schools (88th percentile, 4 stars) in 2025-26, essentially unchanged from 132nd and 138th in the two prior years. About 14.6% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, the second-lowest rate among its Crown Point peers and less than a third of the rate at nearby John Wood Elementary School (58.6%). Chronic absenteeism is 8.5%, well below the district's 13.2% and the state's 16.7%, and down from 12.4% three years ago.

By state standards this is a strong school: its 3rd-grade ELA score of 71.74 is roughly 31 points above the state. But within Crown Point it ranks fifth of six in ELA, last by a hair in math, and fifth in science. The reason is a sharp split between grade levels: 3rd grade beats the district in ELA and trails only Jerry Ross Elementary School, while 5th grade falls 8 points behind the district in ELA and 12 points behind in math. Winfield also has the district's largest classes (18.8 students per teacher) and spends $11,766 per pupil, a 28% increase in four years.

Two patterns are worth watching. Winfield's big ELA gain last year (+9.4 points) matched the district's gain almost exactly, so it looks like a district-wide tide rather than a school turnaround, while its math decline (-5.1 points) was the steepest in the district and occurred as the district rose slightly. Cost-effectiveness is a fair question, since Jerry Ross Elementary School posts higher ELA, math, and science results while spending $759 less per student, and Union Center Elementary School does so on $2,247 less. The bottom line: Winfield is a very good school in a district of excellent ones, with strong early-grade results and excellent attendance.
