Summary:
South Knox School Corp is a small Indiana district of just two schools — South Knox Elementary School serving grades K–6 with 653 students, and South Knox Middle-High School serving grades 7–12 with 562 students — totaling about 1,215 students and ranking 183rd of 374 Indiana districts at the 51st percentile with 3 stars.
The two schools perform very differently. The elementary school is the stronger of the pair: chronic absenteeism is just 6.7%, well below the district's 11.6% and the state's 16.7%, and it posts above-state results in math (50% all grades), 4th and 6th grade science, and especially 5th grade social studies (61.8% vs. the state's 47.2%). Its rank has been steady at about the 64th percentile. Its clear weak spot is 5th grade ELA at 33.71% against the state's 42.2%. The middle-high school graduates 97.9% of students, well above the state's 89.7%, and beats the state in SAT reading/writing, but its rank dropped from the 72nd percentile with 4 stars to the 43rd percentile with 2 stars, its absenteeism is 17.4% (above the state), and its math results are weak.
Math is the biggest warning sign at the secondary level: 7th and 8th grade math sit roughly 10–12 points below state, and SAT Math fell from 26.37% to 9.76% in a single year, now 15.84 points below the state. Worth noting for parents: the middle-high school has lower free/reduced lunch (35.05% vs. 43.19%), a smaller student-teacher ratio (16.5 vs. 18.1), and higher per-student spending ($11,770 vs. $10,701), so the gaps do not appear to be explained by resources or class size alone. The district's middle-of-the-pack ranking masks two very different schools.
