Gary Community School Corp is a 10-school district in Indiana serving 4,383 students in elementary, middle, high, and alternative settings; it ranks 365th of 374 districts statewide, at the 2nd percentile with 0 stars. Six elementary schools enroll 2,386 students (54.4%), two middle schools 720 (16.4%), one high school 1,232 (28.1%), and one alternative 45 (1.0%). The district serves a high-poverty population, with average free/reduced lunch around 60.8%, per-student spending about $17,541, and student-teacher ratios averaging about 17.0.

Relative strengths vary by school. West Side Leadership Academy is the only ranked Gary school with 1 star in the latest two years; it is the largest, improved from the 6th to the 16th percentile, and has the district’s highest graduation rate at 58.6%, though chronic absenteeism is 75.3%. Frankie Woods McCullough Academy has the strongest math results, including 17.26% all-grade math and 35% in 4th-grade math, still below Indiana’s 52%. Banneker Elementary at Marquette leads in ELA and 5th-grade social studies, while Daniel Hale Williams Elementary School has the top all-grade ELA at 13.98% and Beveridge Elementary School has the top science at 18.87%. Mary M Bethune Early Child Dev Center serves PK-K, with the lowest chronic absenteeism at 26.6% and lowest free/reduced lunch rate at 43.72%.

Districtwide, proficiency is far below Indiana: ELA 8.46%, math 7.56%, science 8.99%, SAT ERW 17.02%, SAT Math 14.47%, and graduation rate 57.1%, versus state benchmarks generally in the 40s, 34–52%, 51.9%, 25.6%, and 89.7%. Chronic absenteeism is 63.6% districtwide versus 16.7% statewide; every school exceeds the state rate, led by Bailly Middle School at 79.1% and West Side Leadership Academy at 75.3%. Middle-school math is especially weak, with Bailly Middle School at 2.37%, and Gary Virtual Academy has 45 students, a 33.3% graduation rate, and several suppressed or not-reported values. Improvements at Frankie Woods McCullough Academy, West Side Leadership Academy’s SAT Math, and Beveridge Elementary School’s science jump from 2.44% to 18.87% are encouraging, but no Gary school reaches state benchmarks in any reported subject, and high spending does not simply correlate with outcomes.
