Hagerstown, Indiana, a small city in eastern Indiana, is served by two public schools in the Nettle Creek School Corporation: Hagerstown Elementary School (grades PK–6, enrollment 621) and Hagerstown Junior-Senior High School (grades 7–12, enrollment 551), together enrolling about 1,172 students. The district is ranked 114th of 374 in Indiana, with a 4-star district rating.

The two schools have opposite strengths. Hagerstown Elementary School is the science standout: 4th grade science is 69.23% proficient versus 43.8% statewide (about 25 points above), and 6th grade science is 50.62% versus 41.2%. Its chronic absenteeism, 11.2%, is below the district's 14.3% and the state's 16.7%. Its weak spot is upper-elementary English language arts — 5th grade ELA at 35.9% and 6th grade at 33.33%, both under state averages, with all-grade ELA at 38.36% versus the district's 46.84%.
