Summary:
ZIP code 60714 has five schools: three elementary schools serving grades K–5 and two middle schools serving grades 6–8, with no high schools. In 2025–26, the schools’ equal-weighted averages were 59% proficient in IAR English language arts (ELA) and 45% in math, compared with state results of 56% and 40%. Those averages conceal substantial differences: Emerson Middle School is the clear leader in both subjects.
Emerson Middle School scored 80% in ELA and 62% in math, while the other four schools averaged 54% and 41%, respectively. Emerson’s results were 27 percentage points above that group in ELA and 21 points above in math. At the other end, V H Nelson Elementary School had the lowest all-grades scores: 42% in ELA and 37% in math. The gap between Emerson and Nelson was 39 points in ELA and 25 in math. Grade-level results add useful context: Clarence E Culver School led elementary schools in ELA in grades 3, 4 and 5, while Emerson led middle schools in both subjects in each grade. In science, Culver led grade 5 at 49%, and Emerson led grade 8 at 74%.
All five schools improved in both IAR subjects from 2024–25 to 2025–26, but Mark Twain Elementary School had the standout change: its ELA proficiency rose 12 points, from 40% to 52%. The five-school average increased 4 points in ELA and 2 in math. SchoolDigger ranking percentiles declined for every school over its three-year ranking period; for example, Emerson went from the 90th to the 88th percentile, while Nelson moved from the 42nd to the 28th. These rankings are distinct from test scores. As additional context, Mark Twain and Nelson are both in East Maine School District 63; their 2024–25 free/reduced lunch eligible rates were 67% and 64%, and their student-teacher ratios were 13.9 and 11.9. Mark Twain’s all-grades scores were 10 points higher in ELA and 7 points higher in math. These measures describe school differences but do not explain them.
