Summary:

ZIP code 60625 has 14 schools: nine elementary schools, one middle school and four high schools, with results reported for 2025–2026 and comparisons to state rates. The elementary schools averaged 51% in ELA and 41% in math, compared with state rates of 56% and 40%. The four high schools averaged 64% in 11th-grade ACT ELA, 53% in math and 59% in science, above state rates of 50%, 40% and 48%. The most important finding for families is that results vary sharply from school to school, so the area is not uniformly strong or weak.

Edison Elementary Regional Gifted Center led elementary schools, with 97% proficiency in ELA and 96% in math; Waters Elementary School also stood out, at 75% and 64%. At the other end, Volta Elementary School scored 26% in ELA and 19% in math. Among high schools, Northside College Preparatory High School led in all three ACT subjects, at 96% in ELA, 93% in math and 93% in science—20, 35 and 24 percentage points ahead of the next-highest local school in each subject. SchoolDigger ranked Northside 4th of 620 statewide, with five stars. Roosevelt High School was lowest, at 17% in ELA, 6% in math and 15% in science, and its results were below state rates by 33, 34 and 33 points.

Recent trends are mixed: elementary averages rose from 48% to 51% in ELA and from 39% to 41% in math between 2024–2025 and 2025–2026, while high-school ACT math rose from 48% to 53%; ACT ELA was essentially flat at 64%. SchoolDigger ranked Waters in the 88th percentile in its latest reported year, up from the 82nd, while Chappell Elementary School fell from the 77th to the 56th percentile. The 2024–2025 free/reduced lunch eligible rate was 9% at Edison and 23% at Waters, but it was also 61% at Von Steuben Metro Science High School, which scored above state ACT rates in all three subjects; these are school-level observations, not explanations of results. Attendance also offers useful context: Northside’s chronic absenteeism was 33%, above the state’s 24%, while Edison’s was 11% and Waters’ 13%.
