Summary:

Zip code 60181 has three middle schools serving grades 6–8: Jackson Middle School and Jefferson Middle School in School District 45, and John E. Albright Middle School in Salt Creek School District 48. Their 2025–2026 results show a varied picture: the three-school average was above the state in ELA, math, and eighth-grade science, but individual schools’ results differed substantially. The most important finding is that the school a student attends corresponds to a very different set of reported proficiency results.

John E. Albright was the clear academic leader, with 82% proficient in ELA, 58% in math, and 68% in eighth-grade science—26, 19, and 16 percentage points above the state, respectively. Its results also led the next-highest school by 25 points in ELA, 17 in math, and 14 in science. At the other end, Jefferson had the lowest math result at 26%, 13 points below the state. Its ELA (57%) and eighth-grade science (54%) were above the state, however. Jackson was stronger in math (42%, above the state) but below the state in ELA (48%) and science (44%); its eighth-grade ELA result was especially low at 38%, 25 points below the state.

Results improved from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026: the three-school averages rose 9 points in ELA, 8 in math, and 9 in science, compared with state increases of 3, 1, and 7 points. Gains varied by school: Jefferson rose 16 points in ELA and 15 in science, while Albright rose 15 in math. SchoolDigger’s 2025–2026 statewide rankings also placed Albright highest, at 151 of 1,126 schools (87th percentile), versus Jackson at 679 (40th) and Jefferson at 718 (36th). As context, student–teacher ratios ranged from 9.9 at Albright to 12.9 at Jackson; all three reported free/reduced lunch eligible for 2024–2025, ranging from 38% at Jackson to 60% at Jefferson. These are school-level results and characteristics, not explanations for individual student outcomes.
