Summary

John Deere Middle School serves 770 students in grades 6–8 in Moline, within Moline-Coal Valley CUSD 40. The most important finding is that proficiency trails both the state and district in every reported subject: in 2025–2026, ELA was 38% versus 56% statewide and 43% districtwide, math was 20% versus 40% and 31%, and eighth-grade science was 33% versus 52% and 38%.

Compared with nearby schools, John Deere is near the bottom: it had the second-lowest all-grades ELA result among the 10 schools, tied for a low position in math, and was higher only than Northeast Junior High School in eighth-grade science. The nine nearby schools averaged 53% in ELA, 31% in math and 47% in science—about 15, 11 and 14 percentage points above John Deere, respectively. Within John Deere, grade 7 math is a relative bright spot at 22%, compared with 20% in grade 6 and 17% in grade 8.

Scores have risen since 2023–2024, but John Deere has not caught up with the state: ELA increased by 9 points and math by 8, while the state gaps widened from 12 to 18 points in ELA and from 17 to 20 in math. SchoolDigger’s statewide ranking fell from the 30th percentile in 2023–2024 to the 10th in 2025–2026; John Deere received one star and tied with Edison Junior High School for the lowest nearby percentile. SchoolDigger’s subgroup rankings also show low relative standing in serving English Language Learner Students: the school ranked at the 4th percentile in 2024–2025, versus the 27th percentile overall. Its ranking for serving African American Students shifted from the 54th percentile in 2022–2023 to the 23rd in 2024–2025. Other context: the student-teacher ratio was 15.4 in 2024–2025, and 64% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible that year. Chronic absenteeism improved by 10 percentage points, from 37% in 2021–2022 to 27% in 2025–2026, but remained 4 points above the state and district rates.
