Rock Cut Elementary School consistently underperforms compared to the district and the state of Illinois in both English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics proficiency. In the 2024-2025 school year, only 18.1% of all students at Rock Cut were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 42.2% for the district and 53.1% for the state. In Mathematics, the school's proficiency rate was 24.6%, compared to 27.9% for the district and 38.5% for the state. The school also has consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 25.4% to 33.5% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the state average.

When comparing Rock Cut Elementary School to other schools in the Harlem UD 122 district, it becomes clear that the district as a whole is struggling academically. Most of the nearby schools, such as Ralston Elementary, Loves Park Elementary, and Machesney Elementary, also perform below the state average in ELA and Mathematics proficiency. The school's relatively low student-teacher ratio (around 14:1) and higher-than-average spending per student (between $14,953 and $15,651) suggest that there may be opportunities for targeted interventions and support to improve student outcomes.

Open Quote Most of the teachers and staff did not seem to care about the type of education that the students are getting in the past. They display even less care for special needs students. They are happy to just push the kids through the system.

The previous administration did not like involved parents. By involved I mean parents that care about the education that their child receives and the environment that they are in. Not the PTA, which seems to be only a status club.

Bullying is rampant, and the staff just looks away. Close Quote
