Summary

River Trail School serves 471 students in kindergarten through grade 8 in Gurnee, in Gurnee School District 56. Its latest all-grades test results show a mixed picture: the school is ahead of its district in both English language arts (ELA) and math, but below the state in both subjects. The most important concern is that the state proficiency gap has widened in both subjects even as River Trail’s scores improved.

ELA is River Trail’s clearer strength among nearby schools: in 2025–2026, 37% of students were proficient, 9 percentage points above the nearby-school average and fourth-highest among nine schools with results. Math was less favorable locally: 22% were proficient, about 2 points below the nearby average, ranking fifth. River Trail was still ahead of its district in ELA (29%) and math (16%), but below state results of 56% and 40%, respectively. Scores rose between 2023–2024 and 2025–2026, but more slowly than statewide results: ELA increased 6 points while the state gained 15, and math rose 3 points while the state gained 11.
