Summary

Spencer Technology Academy Elementary School serves pre-K through grade 8 and enrolls 427 students in Chicago, within Chicago Public Schools District 299, which SchoolDigger ranks at the 23rd percentile statewide and rates one star. Spencer’s 2025–2026 chronic absenteeism rate was 53%, compared with 39% in the district and 24% statewide; it was the third-highest among nearby schools with reported results. Although that rate has fallen from 78% in 2021–2022, chronic absenteeism remains the school’s most pressing concern.

Test results show a mixed picture: they trail district and state averages overall, but compare favorably with nearby schools. In 2025–2026, Spencer’s all-grades proficiency was 31% in English language arts (ELA) and 18% in math. Those results were 15 and 11 percentage points below the district, and 26 and 21 points below the state, respectively. Yet Spencer ranked fourth among 11 nearby schools in ELA and second among nearby schools with reported math scores. Third-grade math was a standout: 50% were proficient, above the district’s 38% and the state’s 49%; Spencer also had the highest reported result among nearby schools, ahead of Moving Everest Charter School and McNair Elementary School.

Proficiency has risen over the past three reported years: ELA increased from 9% in 2023–2024 to 31% in 2025–2026, while math rose from 7% to 18%. The ELA gap with the state narrowed by 7 percentage points; the math gap was essentially unchanged. SchoolDigger’s overall percentile improved from 4 in 2022–2023 to 25 in 2025–2026, though the school remains in the state’s lower quarter. Its 2024–2025 student-teacher ratio was 12.3, near the local median. For 2024–2025, the school reported “All students receive free meals” through Community Eligibility (CEP); nearby schools’ free/reduced lunch eligibility figures are a different measure and are not directly comparable. SchoolDigger’s 2024–2025 ranking placed African American students at the 46th percentile, compared with the school’s overall 20th percentile, and that group’s ranking rose from the 20th percentile in 2022–2023.
