Summary

Tanner Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Chicago, Illinois, with 257 students. The school is part of the Chicago Public Schools District 299, which is ranked 698 out of 811 districts in Illinois and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Tanner Elementary School has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of Illinois elementary schools over the past several years, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Tanner Elementary School significantly underperforms compared to the district and state in both English Language Arts and Mathematics proficiency across all grade levels. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, only 20.5% of Tanner students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 42.8% for the district and 53.1% for the state. In Mathematics, only 3.3% of Tanner students were proficient or better, compared to 27.3% for the district and 38.5% for the state. The school also has consistently high rates of chronic absenteeism, ranging from 25.4% to 51.5% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the district and state averages.

Interestingly, the nearby schools in the same district, such as Ruggles Elementary, Madison Elementary, and Deneen Elementary, generally outperform Tanner Elementary School in academic proficiency, chronic absenteeism, and student group performance. This suggests that the challenges faced by Tanner Elementary School may be specific to the school itself, rather than solely due to district-level factors. Addressing the high rates of chronic absenteeism and the school's struggles to serve its student subgroups effectively may be key to improving the academic performance at Tanner Elementary School.

Open Quote Hi, I do not attend Tanner however, I have known the principal since he was in his late teens and I must say that he is a great person one of his best attributes is his compassion. Definitely known by his peers as one always seeking the peaceful resolution, and with the level of popularity he experienced, countless intense situations would have took a turn opposite of peaceful without his intervention or with his approval. I was somewhat moved by a comment a parent made with regard to an incident at the school in April, relating to her child being mistreated while the principal watched. Of course I was not there but I again have known principal Smith for many years and I along with any other individual who knows him question the validity of that comment. Principal Smith is a man of good character and the student as well as the faculty are Blessed that he is the leader there. I would say to the parent who has every right and duty to fight for her child, as a parent of a 12th grader I know and understand how important that is for the all around well being of a child. I really don't think you received a true account of the incident whether it be what happen prior or during. Principal Smith is definitely not a person who would mistreat a child or stand by and allow it, he wouldn't and there are many people who could confirm that. Close Quote
