Middle Schools in Cusd 308

Five middle schools in CUSD 308 serve grades 6–8. In 2025–2026, their average ELA result was 63%, compared with 56% statewide, and their average grade 8 science result was 59%, compared with 52% statewide. Mathematics was different: the schools averaged about 40%, essentially level with the state. The most important finding is that the group’s stronger-than-state ELA and science results do not extend to mathematics, where results vary widely from school to school.

Murphy Junior High and Bednarcik Junior High School lead in different areas. Murphy had the highest all-grades ELA score at 72% and grade 8 science score at 74%; Bednarcik led all-grades mathematics at 52%. At the other end, Thompson Junior High School had the lowest ELA score, 54%, and science score, 43%, while Plank Junior High had the lowest mathematics score, 26%. The top-to-bottom gaps were 19 points in ELA, 31 in science, and 26 in mathematics. Murphy also stands out in grade 8, scoring 82% in ELA and 55% in mathematics.

Scores are moving in different directions: every school improved in ELA, and the group average rose by 5 points; the mathematics average fell by 1 point, while the science average rose by 6 points, just short of the state’s 7-point gain. SchoolDigger gives Murphy and Bednarcik four stars, Traughber Junior High School three, and Thompson and Plank two; all five schools’ SchoolDigger statewide percentiles declined from 2023–2024 to 2025–2026. As context, the schools reported free/reduced lunch eligible shares for 2024–2025 ranging from 20% at Murphy to 42% at Thompson; these figures describe the schools but do not explain their results.
