Galena Unified School District 120

Galena Unified School District 120 has two schools serving preschool through grade 12: Galena Elementary and Middle School serves PK–8, and Galena High School serves grades 9–12. In 2025–2026, both schools were above state results in most reported grade-and-subject comparisons. The clearest overall finding is that the elementary and middle school was above the state in 13 of 14 comparisons, while the high school was above in 8 of 9.

Galena Elementary and Middle School stands out for consistently strong results, particularly in math: its all-grades proficiency was 61%, compared with 40% statewide, a 21-point advantage. Its all-grades ELA result was 69% versus 56% statewide, a 12-point advantage. Grade 6 ELA was the notable exception, 52% versus 59% statewide, 7 points below. Galena High School also exceeded the state in most comparisons, but grade 9 science was a marked weak spot: 33% versus 47%, 14 points below. These results do not support a fair overall achievement ranking between schools because they serve different grades and have different test results.

Recent trends are mixed: elementary/middle-school math gained ground relative to the state, while its ELA margin stayed about the same. From 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, its math margin grew from 17 to 21 points, while the ELA margin remained about 12 points; grade 5 science’s margin increased from 2 to 22 points. At the high school, math margins narrowed across grades, and grade 9 science shifted from 1 point above the state to 14 points below. SchoolDigger ranked the elementary/middle school at the 78th percentile in 2025–2026, close to its previous 77th percentile; the high school was at the 69th percentile, down from 80th the year before. In 2024–2025, student-teacher ratios were 12.0 and 11.6, respectively; both schools reported free/reduced lunch eligible in 2024–2025, at 31% and 35%. These are contextual differences, not explanations for achievement results.
