Summary:

Berwyn South School District 100 has two middle schools, both serving grades 6–8: Freedom Middle School and Heritage Middle School. In 2025–2026, Heritage was above the state in all-grade English language arts (ELA) and mathematics, while Freedom was below the state in both; the two-school averages were also below state results in ELA, math, and grade 8 science. The clearest finding is that Heritage leads Freedom across every reported subject and grade, though results across the pair are uneven.

Heritage is the standout, with 61% proficiency in all-grade ELA and 41% in math—14 and 16 percentage points higher than Freedom, respectively. Heritage also led in grade 8 science, at 54% versus 33%, a 21-point difference. Heritage’s ELA and math results were 5 and 1 point above state rates; Freedom’s were 9 and 15 points below. The contrast appears in SchoolDigger’s rankings, too: Heritage ranked 525th of 1,126 Illinois middle schools (53rd percentile, 3 stars), while Freedom ranked 912th (19th percentile, 1 star). These rankings are not test scores.

ELA improved at both schools from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026: by about 6 points at Freedom and 5 at Heritage, while math rose 4 points at Freedom and was unchanged at Heritage. Grade 8 science moved in different directions: it fell 2 points at Freedom and rose 7 at Heritage, while the state rate rose 7. Other school measures provide context, not explanations: in 2025–2026, chronic absenteeism was 31% at Freedom and 21% at Heritage, compared with 24% statewide. In sy 2024–2025, the student-teacher ratios were 10.7 at Freedom and 8.6 at Heritage; free/reduced lunch eligible was 82% and 74%, respectively.
