Summary:
Athens CUSD 213 serves prekindergarten through grade 12 in the Athens and Cantrall area through four schools: Cantrall Elementary School (PK–3), Cantrall Intermediate School (4–6), Athens Junior High School (7–8), and Athens Senior High School (9–12). The clearest concern is the contrast between strong results in several grades and weaker grade 9 results at the high school: grade 9 math was 22% proficient, 20 percentage points below the state, while grade 10 and 11 results were above state in all three subjects.
Cantrall Intermediate stands out for consistent above-state results in every reported grade and subject, including grade 4 math, 63% versus 42% statewide, a 21-point lead. Athens Junior High has a notable grade 8: science was 73% versus 52% statewide, and ELA was 82% versus 63%. At the other end, Athens Senior High grade 9 math was 22% versus 42% statewide, and science was 34% versus 47%. Athens Junior High grade 7 ELA was also below state, by 4 points.
Results have moved in different directions over two years: Athens Junior High all-grades IAR ELA and math each rose about 10 points, while its grade 8 science rose 34 points; Athens Senior High grade 11 ACT ELA, math, and science rose 26, 17, and 22 points. In contrast, Cantrall Elementary math fell 13 points. SchoolDigger ranks the district 268th of 738, in the 64th percentile with three stars; it ranks Athens Senior High 224th of 620 and Athens Junior High 370th of 1,126, both with three stars. Student-teacher ratios are close, from 13.1 to 13.6. In 2024–25, free/reduced lunch eligible figures ranged from 31% at Athens Senior High to 40% at Athens Junior High; these are context, not explanations of achievement. Since the schools serve different grades, their schoolwide results are not like-grade comparisons.
