Summary:
Newton, Illinois, has three schools serving grades 1–12: Newton Elementary School, Jasper County Junior High, and Newton Community High School. The strongest overall IAR results are at the elementary school: in 2025–26, its All Grades proficiency was 60% in ELA and 48% in math, compared with state results of 56% and 40%. The junior high was below the state in both subjects, particularly math, at 26%. The clearest area-wide takeaway is that elementary results are above state rates overall, while junior-high math is a substantial weakness.
Newton Elementary School stands out at the top of the available IAR comparisons, with All Grades results 4 points above the state in ELA and 8 points above in math. Jasper County Junior High is at the bottom for All Grades math: its 26% result was 14 points below the state, and grade 8 math was 16% versus 35% statewide, a 19-point gap. Newton Community High School had results below the state in all supplied 2025–26 test comparisons; grade 9 math was the largest gap, 16% versus 42%, or 27 points lower. Graduation was a notable strength, however: 99% compared with 90% statewide.
Recent results show improvement at the junior high but a mixed picture elsewhere. From 2024–25 to 2025–26, junior-high All Grades ELA rose 10 points and math rose 9; elementary ELA increased 3 points, while math fell 6. High-school grade 11 ACT math and science declined 9 and 17 points, while grade 9 PreACT math fell 15 points. SchoolDigger’s rankings also dropped from 2023–24 to 2025–26: 10 percentile points at the elementary school, 16 at the junior high, and 34 at the high school. For 2024–25 context, free/reduced lunch eligible rates were 49% at elementary, 46% at junior high, and 40% at high school; student-teacher ratios were 12.8, 18.8, and 15.5, respectively.
