Summary:

McHenry, Illinois, has eight schools: five elementary schools, two middle schools serving grades 6–8, and one high school. The latest results are from 2025–2026, and the elementary schools serve different grade spans. The clearest overall elementary standout is Valley View Elementary School, which led the listed schools in both ELA and math in each directly comparable grade, grades 3, 4, and 5.

Valley View was especially strong in grade 4: 75% in ELA and 54% in math, respectively 19 and 12 percentage points above the state. Results vary by grade, though: Hilltop Elementary School led grade 3 math at 58%, 9 points above the state, but its grade 3 ELA was 38%, 10 points below. Chauncey H. Duker School was among the lowest in several matched-grade comparisons, including grade 4 ELA and math, where it trailed Valley View by 30 and 25 points. Among middle schools, Parkland School outscored McHenry Middle School by 5 points in ELA and 9 in math. At the high school, science was the strongest subject relative to the state: McHenry Community High School averaged a 4-point advantage across its reported science comparisons.

Recent changes differ by school and level. Both middle schools improved in ELA and math from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026; elementary schools’ average ELA result fell 3 points while the state result rose 3 points. Individual changes were more dramatic: Edgebrook Elementary School’s math result fell 24 points, while Hilltop’s rose 16. SchoolDigger statewide percentiles also declined from 2023–2024 to 2025–2026 at McHenry Middle (60 to 45), Riverwood Elementary School (49 to 27), and Duker (41 to 21). As context, Parkland and McHenry Middle had free/reduced lunch eligible shares of 38% and 41% in 2024–2025, and student–teacher ratios of 11.3 and 11.7; Parkland had higher reported test results despite those similarities.
