Terreton Elementary School

Terreton Elementary School is a small rural school in Terreton, Idaho, serving 296 students in pre-kindergarten through 6th grade. The school is part of the West Jefferson District, which ranks in the bottom quarter of Idaho districts. Terreton serves a higher-poverty population than nearby schools, with nearly 60% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.

Despite its low overall state ranking, Terreton has a genuine strength in math. In the most recent school year, 44.4% of students were proficient in math—slightly above the Idaho state average and well above its own district's average. Math scores have climbed steadily over the past three years, from 29.6% to 44.4%. In fact, Terreton outperformed Roberts Elementary School in math by seven percentage points, even though Roberts belongs to the much higher-ranked Jefferson County Joint District. However, English language arts remains a significant weakness, with only 36.1% proficiency compared with the state average of 54%. Science is also a challenge, lagging the state by about ten points.

Terreton's attendance is a notable advantage. Chronic absenteeism has remained well below state averages, and at 10.8% it is less than half the rate at Roberts Elementary (21.8%). Yet the school faces structural challenges: its student–teacher ratio of 21.8 is far higher than nearby Hamer Elementary (13.0) and Roberts (14.8), even though Terreton spends more per student than Roberts. In short, Terreton is a school with real academic momentum in math and strong attendance, but meaningful gains in literacy and science—along with smaller class sizes—will be needed to lift its overall rating.
