St Maries High School is a rural public high school in Saint Maries, Idaho, serving 282 students in grades 9–12 as the primary high school of the St Maries Joint District. The school has historically performed well, reaching a 4-star, 72nd-percentile statewide ranking in 2022-2023. However, its most recent 2025-2026 ranking fell to 1 star and the 17th percentile — one of the steepest declines among Idaho high schools.

English Language Arts has long been the school's strength, with 75.9% proficiency in 2023-2024 versus 53.3% statewide. That dropped to 57.8% in 2024-2025, and the latest End-of-Course ELA score of 48.1% fell below the state average of 61.3%. Math has declined even more sharply, from 43.4% proficiency in 2023-2024 to 26.6% in 2024-2025 — far behind the state's 43.1% and behind Kootenai Junior/Senior High School at 43.3%. Science also fell from near-average to 22.2% on the latest End-of-Course exam versus 41.2% statewide. St Maries still outperformed Lakeside High School in ELA (57.8% vs. 36.7%), but Lakeside serves a much higher-poverty population.

The most urgent issue is attendance. Chronic absenteeism jumped from 24.0% in 2021-2022 to 42.4% in 2024-2025 — nearly three times the state rate of 14.6%. Over the same period, free/reduced-price lunch eligibility rose from 32.6% to 46.1%, signaling growing economic stress. St Maries also spends far less per student ($11,149) than nearby Lakeside ($21,499) or Kootenai ($19,682), with a higher student-teacher ratio of 14.1. Graduation rates have generally hovered near the state average, which is a positive sign. Yet the school now resembles Kootenai in poverty level but Lakeside in absenteeism — an unfavorable combination. With rising needs and limited resources, St Maries High School is at a crossroads. Addressing chronic absenteeism is the clearest opportunity to reverse the downward trend.
