Summary

Wood River Middle School serves 467 students in grades 6–8 in Hailey, Idaho, a small mountain town in the Blaine County District, but its academic standing has changed dramatically over the past decade. Once a top-quartile Idaho middle school earning 4-star ratings and ranking in the 77th–79th percentile statewide between 2014 and 2017, Wood River Middle has declined steadily to a 1-star rating and now ranks in the 20th percentile (140th of 174 middle schools) for the 2025–2026 school year.

Test scores tell a similar story. On the 2025–2026 ISAT, only 35.6% of students were proficient in math and 43.9% in English Language Arts, compared with state averages of 43.1% and 54.0%, respectively. The school also trails the district in every subject. Eighth-grade science has fallen especially hard, dropping from 46.2% proficiency in 2022–2023 to just 32.9% in 2025–2026, ten points below the state. Sixth grade is a particular concern: only 28.3% of 6th graders are proficient in math versus 42.5% statewide, and 38.6% are proficient in ELA versus 51.5% statewide. These numbers suggest students are entering middle school behind and struggling to catch up.

There are some bright spots. Chronic absenteeism has dropped from 32% in 2021–2022 to 13.5% in 2025–2026, now essentially matching the state average. The school also maintains a favorable student-teacher ratio of 11.5, and its spending per student is solid. Yet better attendance and low class sizes have not translated into academic gains, and achievement gaps between student groups remain substantial. The share of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch has risen from 31.7% to 44.8% in three years, adding pressure. The central challenge for Wood River Middle School and the Blaine County District is ensuring that all students benefit equally from the school's resources and recent improvements in engagement.

Open Quote The teachers here are as disengaged and uninterested in our children as you would find in an inner city school. Having grown up in this formerly close knit community, I am deeply disappointed and worried for our children who are NOT getting the education that we as parents expect from a school so rich in funding and resources.
