Alaka'i O Kaua'i Charter School is a K–8 charter school with 242 students on the south shore of Kauai, at 2-4035 Kaumualii Hwy in Koloa, and it operates within the statewide Hawaii Department of Education. It currently ranks 96th of 203 Hawaii elementary schools in 2025–2026 (53rd percentile, 3 stars), down from 46th of 204 (77th percentile, 4 stars) the year before — a 24-percentile-point single-year drop and the school's lowest standing since 2018–2019, after a long climb from the 39th percentile and a four-year plateau in the 70s.

What the school does well is clear. In 2024–2025 it posted the highest English language arts proficiency (72%) and the highest science proficiency (73%) of the ten comparable Kauai schools, and in 2025–2026 ELA was 63%, still above the peer average. Chronic absenteeism is 19.0%, second-lowest in the group and well below the roughly 26.6% peer average, even though it serves middle grades where attendance typically slips. Special education students ranked among the top three schools statewide (98th percentile, 5 stars). Proficiency has sat in the mid-40s for four straight years (45% in 2025–2026), producing an 18-point gap between ELA and math when every neighboring school is roughly balanced across the two subjects. The 2025–2026 ranking dip was driven mainly by science, which fell 32 points to 41% after swinging 47.5 → 73 → 41 across three years, and by a 4-point math decline, while ELA held. There was no school lunch for anyone. No kitchen facility. My child’s 504 plan from AZ was ignored. 5th grade teacher had numerous complaints from parents and Director did nothing to address concerns. Daughter got the lowest state test results in math and reading ever. Their SBAC scores as a school falls very very short on competency levels in math and reading. Close Quote
