Open Quote My son just completed kindergarten here, and I have only had very positive experiences with the school, staff, and teachers. Great communication from the teacher and staff, great feedback to the parents, emphasis on creativity and problem solving, along with teamwork. My son was reading by the end of kindergarten. Love this school!! Close Quote

Open Quote We love Hickam Elementary as does our daughter. Ms. Reid is amazing and very attentive to the needs of my daughter's education. We couldn't be happier. We also enjoy going to all the events at the school. Close Quote

Open Quote My kids attended Hickam from 2010-2013. While some of the teachers and staff are great, I am going to address the problem with 2nd grade specifically, and the policies that are not being upheld to state standard. I had to homeschool my 2nd grader after unsuccessfully working with the teacher, and principle. The work load is overwhelming, fun activities are only permitted if all work is done, kids are all expected to perform at the same level, and recesses are used as punishment to complete work if not done. This is against state regulations. For years, I've heard, and experienced these problems, and parents are told "well everyone else can keep up". This is not true. My son rarely had a behavioral problem, but struggled in English. By the end of 1st quarter, he felt he was the worst student and cried about missing Rocking Readers, Recesses, and Parties. My volunteering in class was useless to help the situation. I would encourage any parent going through this to get involved in voicing our frustrations and make a positive change. I found many parents going through the same thing at Hickam, but nothing changed for the better. Close Quote

Open Quote I don't care for the amount of homework my children (ages 8 and 10) have. They have so many folder, notebooks and composition books to keep track of it is ridiculous. I feel they are trying to make up for the low national ranking by making it really hard for the children. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
