Summary

Northside Elementary in Cedartown, GA, is a PK-5 school in Polk County serving about 531 students, with a strong majority qualifying for free or reduced lunch. The school has been steadily improving its statewide ranking over the past several years, climbing from the 20th percentile in 2021-2022 to the 31st percentile in 2025-2026—a positive trend that suggests recent efforts are paying off.

One of the school's standout strengths is its work with English Language Learner (ELL) students, who perform in the 56th percentile statewide—far above the school's overall ranking. This suggests Northside has developed effective strategies for language acquisition that could benefit other groups. However, there are notable gaps. While male students rank in the 40th percentile, female students rank in the 27th, and the school's performance with White students is a serious concern, ranking in the 2nd percentile statewide. In academics, math has shown real improvement—3rd grade proficiency jumped from 15.7% to 41% in three years—but 5th grade science remains a weak spot at 27.5% proficiency, well below the state average of 44.2%. Chronic absenteeism is a bright spot: at 14.8%, it's below both the district (15.7%) and state (17.7%) averages, which is notable given the school's high poverty rate.

Compared to nearby schools, Northside sits below most of its Polk County peers. Youngs Grove Elementary, just 5 miles away, ranks in the 54th percentile and achieves higher proficiency in nearly every subject despite serving an even higher-poverty population. Westside Elementary, only 1.5 miles away, also outperforms Northside in science and has a chronic absenteeism rate of just 7.1%. Northside does spend more per student ($15,014) than most district peers, yet results don't always reflect that investment. The school is clearly moving in the right direction, but there's room to learn from nearby schools that are seeing stronger outcomes with similar student populations.

Open Quote While I think that the teachers are trying to do the best that they can at Northside, this is a terrible school. We moved in the middle of the school year and my son was in 4th grade and was constantly teased, made fun of and bullied all through his time there. I was very disappointed with the lack of communication from the teachers with the parents. If I had to do it all over again, I'd take my son somewhere else. Even homeschooling would have been better than Northside. Close Quote
