Summary

Blackmon Road Middle School in Columbus, GA, serves 478 students in grades 6–8 and is part of the Muscogee County School District, where it ranks as a solid mid-tier school (54th percentile statewide) despite the district's overall 1-star rating.

The school's biggest standout is its Algebra I program: 88.1% of 8th graders scored proficient or better in 2025–2026, compared to just 35.7% district-wide and 48.1% statewide. This is a consistent strength—proficiency has ranged from 72% to 97% over the past four years, far outpacing nearby schools like Aaron Cohn Middle School (91.4% in 2024–2025) and Richards Middle School (100%). The school also excels in 8th grade science (36.8% proficient vs. 18.2% district) and social studies (40.9% vs. 25.4% district), and its special education students rank in the 63rd percentile statewide—a notable strength. Chronic absenteeism has dropped from 25.5% to 16.7% over three years, now better than both district (19.5%) and state (17.7%) averages, and the student-teacher ratio of 10.3:1 is among the most favorable in the area—better than Baker Middle School (15.6) and Rothschild Leadership Academy School (13.9).

However, the school has seen a gradual ranking decline since its 2021–2022 peak (83rd percentile), and 6th and 7th grade math scores lag state averages by 13–15 percentage points. While 8th grade math is strong (44.3% proficient vs. 28.4% district), the gap suggests the school's math excellence is concentrated in the upper grades. Per-student spending has risen 43% over three years to $16,978, and the school now serves a higher percentage of students qualifying for free/reduced lunch (78.7% in 2024–2025, up from 48.6% two years prior). Compared to nearby schools, Blackmon Road ranks third among ten Muscogee County middle schools, behind Richards Middle School (74th percentile) and Aaron Cohn Middle School (66th percentile), but ahead of Veterans Memorial Middle School (47th percentile) and all others in the district.

Open Quote What a great school. My daughter attends here and we could not be happier. Don't homeschool your kids and have them miss out on the activities a school can provide. At least if your kid can go to this school. The Principle and teachers are second to none. Sports, Band, Honors, etc... Close Quote

Open Quote Two of my children attend there and the level of academics has been impressive. They are both coming from gifted programs in California, and they have continued to be challenged at BRMS. Close Quote
