Summary

Hickory Hills Elementary School in Marietta, GA, serves approximately 440 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Marietta City district, and has climbed from a 1-star rating to a consistent 3-star rating over the past five years, now ranking in the 60th percentile statewide.

The most impressive story at Hickory Hills is its dramatic improvement in attendance. Chronic absenteeism has been cut in half over three years, dropping from 15.8% to just 7.8%—far better than the district average of 19.8% and the state average of 17.7%. This means your child is much more likely to be in class consistently here than at nearby Park Street Elementary (22.4% chronic absenteeism) or Dunleith Elementary (13.1%). In math, the school is solid across all grade levels, with roughly 53% of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders meeting proficiency—beating state averages by 5 to 9 points. The school also achieves strong results despite serving a population where 61% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, outperforming several nearby schools with lower poverty rates, including Green Acres Elementary (23rd percentile) and LaBelle Elementary (27th percentile).

There are two areas to watch. First, 5th-grade science proficiency sits at just 27.2%, nearly 20 points below the district average—a clear opportunity for growth, especially since A.L. Burruss Elementary achieves 56% with a similar student profile. Second, there is a notable gender gap: female students rank in the 70th percentile statewide, while male students rank in the 48th percentile. On the positive side, the school spends $20,591 per student—less than several lower-performing neighbors like Milford Elementary ($22,204) and Fair Oaks Elementary—suggesting efficient use of resources. While it trails the district's magnet programs like West Side Elementary (99th percentile) and Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (100th percentile), Hickory Hills offers a strong, improving option for families seeking a neighborhood school with a proven upward trajectory.
