Bradwell Institute

Bradwell Institute is a large public high school in Hinesville, GA, serving roughly 1,900 students in grades 9–12 as part of the Liberty County school district. The school has seen its state ranking decline over the past decade, moving from the 54th percentile in 2016–2017 to the 25th percentile in 2025–2026, and it currently holds a 1-star rating. Nearly 89% of students now qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, a sharp increase from about 68% just two years earlier, reflecting significant economic shifts in the community.

The most pressing challenge at Bradwell is chronic absenteeism. Nearly half of students (48.8%) miss 10% or more of the school year—roughly three times the state average of 17.7% and far higher than nearby Richmond Hill High School (15.1%) or Long County High School (23.5%). Even Liberty County High School, just a few miles away, outperforms Bradwell by 13–20 percentage points in these subjects.

Despite these struggles, Bradwell posts a strong graduation rate of 92.7%—above the state average of 87.2%—and a dropout rate below the state average. The school also spends $11,653 per student, more than Richmond Hill, yet achieves far weaker results, suggesting that resources alone aren't the issue. The comparison with Long County is especially telling: serving a similarly economically disadvantaged population just 13 miles away, Long County achieves proficiency rates 30–34 points higher and has less than half the chronic absenteeism. For parents, the clearest takeaway is that attendance is the critical lever at Bradwell—addressing it would likely improve academics, but the entrenched nature of the problem means meaningful change will require sustained, targeted effort.
