Summary

Virtual Preparatory Academy of GA @ Jenkins in Millen, GA, is a K-12 alternative virtual school serving 604 students within the Jenkins County school district, which is rated 1-star and ranks in the bottom 20% of Georgia districts.

This school faces significant challenges with student engagement and academic performance. The most concerning statistic is the chronic absenteeism rate of 52%—meaning more than half of students are regularly missing school. This is nearly three times the state average of 17.7% and higher than the district's already-elevated 44.3%. The dropout rate of 15.7% is also striking, more than six times the state average of 2.4%. These numbers suggest that the virtual learning model may not be effectively connecting with many students, especially given the very high student-to-teacher ratio of 37.7:1, which limits the individual support available in an online setting.

Academic proficiency rates are dramatically below both district and state averages across all subjects. For example, only 3.8% of 3rd graders are proficient in math, compared to 22.4% in the district and 48.3% statewide. In 6th-grade math, proficiency is just 1.7% versus 40.7% statewide. End-of-course exams tell a similar story: Algebra I proficiency is 8.4% (state: 48.1%) and Biology is 12% (state: 47.2%). As an alternative school, this may serve students who have struggled elsewhere, which could explain some of these gaps. However, the combination of high absenteeism, high dropout rates, and low test scores points to systemic issues that go beyond any single factor. English Language Arts scores are not yet available and will be released in December. There are no other schools within 20 miles for comparison, so families should weigh these challenges carefully when considering this option.

Open Quote I had my child enrolled into this school for 3rd grade with an IEP. The school struggled to keep a special education teacher. The teachers did not assign or complete assignments with my son based on his IEP goals. At the beginning of the year, I specifically asked a special education teacher if she would be collecting data on my child based on his IEP. The answer given was "yes". The teachers did not collect data on my child based on his IEP. The school simply documents the grades on work submitted through the learning software. Only on a handfull of times did any teacher work with my son one-on-one to meet him where he was at and to work on his IEP goals. The school offered to have a Psychologist evaluate my child, but it was clear that the Psychologist could not provide a quality evaluation for my child based on the circumstances which included the fact that his special education teacher had just quit abruptly and none of the other teachers could provide helpful info for an evaluation. I was ignored repeatedly throughout the entire year regarding my concerns. The only way I could get any response from the school regarding concerns about services, grades, IEP meeting requests, etc was to submit a complaint to the Georgia Dept of Education. My child's final grade at the school did not look accurate and I asked for an explanation repeatedly from my child's teacher, the special education coordinator, and the principal, and no one responded to me whatsoever. A couple of the special education teachers were not good teachers. My son had 5 different special education teachers during one year because they came and went frequently. This school is definitely not for kids with an IEP. They do not have an alternative curriculum. I don't know why they accept or agree tp enroll students who provide an IEP that indicates they need an alternative curriculum knowing that they cannot accommodate fairly such a child. I filed complaints to the Dept of Education about this school twice in one year. Do not enroll your IEP child into this school. They do not offer a Fair and Appropriate Education to such students. The learning software and you as the learning coach will primarily be who is teaching your child. Close Quote
