This school stands out for its exceptional and rapidly improving math scores. In 4th grade, 81.5% of students are proficient in math—a remarkable 21.5 percentage points above the district average and 31 points above the state. This represents a 23-point improvement over just three years. The school also posts strong results in 3rd and 5th grade math, and its science scores have been above state averages for three consecutive years. Notably, Gum Springs outperforms its nearest neighbor, Heroes Elementary School, by over 200 ranking positions, and even beats Jefferson Academy—a school in the higher-ranked Jefferson City district—in 4th grade math by 11.5 points. It also leads other nearby schools like West Jackson Elementary School and North Jackson Elementary School in overall ranking.

Beyond academics, Gum Springs excels at keeping students in school. Its chronic absenteeism rate is just 7.4%—less than half the state average of 17.7%—which is especially impressive given that nearly a third of students qualify for free/reduced lunch. The school also ranks in the 87th percentile statewide for its effectiveness with Special Education students. Perhaps most tellingly, Gum Springs achieves these results while spending less per student ($13,852) than several nearby schools that rank much lower, including Bramlett Elementary School ($17,072) and Winder Elementary School ($17,809). With a favorable 13.7:1 student-teacher ratio and consistent year-over-year improvement—climbing from the 70th to the 86th percentile in five years—Gum Springs demonstrates that effective instruction and strong family engagement can drive success regardless of budget or demographics.

Open Quote We moved here from Fulton County Ga. this is a totally different school system. I think this school is actually trying to make our kids dumb. They have no spelling, almost no homework and the fifth grade group of teachers are like talking to walls. The principal just walks around and does nothing! We have had more issues with this school in a half of a.year than in 5years in Fulton County. Can't wait to get our kids out. Close Quote
