Open Quote Irwin County Middle School WAS a great school until this current year, The "official" seems more concerned about overly disciplining students instead of encouraging them to try harder and be positive. The teachers are as good as they can be but under these new ridiculous rules even they are frustrated! My child has attended Irwin County Schools for 8 years and iv never had a problem until now! Also, in 8 years she has never been in ANY trouble and now she just don't care bc of the officials new policy that does absolutely NOTHING but discourage them and leave them confused! I don't stand alone on this issue either. Several parents are experience it and have transferred out. If the board members would do their job which is to look out for the wellbeing of our children, instead of saving face, they would realize just how much they have neglected these kids that only want to succeed in life! Parent involvement don't exist unless the situation is critical or a parent just drops by. What amazes me is how unfair average students are treated compared to school athletes. YES it is an issue at this school! I just hope someone that actually gives a dam takes over this school and be there for the STUDENTS and not colleagues! No wonder AYP is never met by this school, the kids are too busy sitting in ISS to learn anything! How dumb can a rule be that if a middle school child (ages 11-13 est.) is tardy in the mornings 3 times in the year, they receive detention! HELLO! THESE KIDS CANT DRIVE, IS IT RIGHT TO PUNISH THEM? When I take my kids to school in the mornings, my child gets terrified about being 1 minute tardy bc she will be in detention! Kids deal with enough at this age, punish the parents being there late, hell ill suck it up if it will take the heat off my child! If your miserable in this career choice, LEAVE! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
