Summary

Franklin County High School in Carnesville, GA, serves approximately 1,043 students in grades 9–12 and is part of the Franklin County district, which ranks in the middle of the pack statewide.

One of the school’s standout strengths is its work with special education students, where it ranks in the top quarter of Georgia high schools (72nd percentile)—a remarkable achievement that outpaces every nearby school in the region. The school also posts a strong graduation rate of 92.2%, beating the state average of 87.2% by five points and staying competitive with neighbors like Banks County High School (92.7%) and Madison County High School (93.9%). However, the school faces real challenges in core academics. In the most recent testing year, Algebra I proficiency (43.1%) trailed the district average (53%) and the state (48.1%), while Biology proficiency (37.3%) fell about 10 points below the state. U.S. History, a former bright spot, dropped sharply to 32.7%, now below the state average. The school also struggles with chronic absenteeism at 24.8%, notably higher than the state average of 17.7% and above nearby Commerce High School (14.0%) and Hart County High School (16.1%).

A dramatic shift in student demographics is important context: the percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch jumped from 54.1% to 87.9% in a single year, a change that likely explains recent performance dips. The school has shown resilience, with Algebra I rebounding from 30.5% to 43.1% in the latest year. While the school ranks near the bottom of its regional peer group—ahead of only Stephens County High School—its exceptional support for special education students and strong graduation outcomes suggest effective systems that could be expanded. For parents, this is a school navigating significant change while maintaining a clear commitment to helping students finish high school.

Open Quote It is my daughters first year in Franklin County High School and she is having a great year so far. She likes the teachers and they like her. The band\chorus teacher is the best I have seen, and I have already raised three boys in this school. I don't hear of to many fights or conflict. Her grade average is 91. So I would like to say thank you to all the teachers. Close Quote

Open Quote The kids in the school are smarter than the staff that's teaching them, The Assistant principal clearly doesn't like kids in my opinion. My daughter will be forever traumatized from the year she spent there. The state needs to fire everybody from top to bottom and hire staff that will help students learn and become successful adults.
